Student Innovators Project

This year at BETT Gloucestershire College Digital Technology team presented the successful Student Innovator Project. The BETT show is an annual education exhibition featuring the latest technology from around the UK and the world hosted over four days. We were selected to present about the project, in particular the positive impact it is having at Gloucestershire College. The project is helping departments to find out which apps students use with their learning and looks at ways they can be implemented within teaching. The presentation, a featured talk within the FE and Skills arena, was delivered by project lead, Catherine Hartell, and two Business and Enterprise Level 3 students. We all had a great time exploring and testing out new apps and networking with other education institutions.

In Spring 2014 we launched the Student Innovators Project to promote digital technology within our college; students across all levels and backgrounds volunteered to join the team. The students were enthusiastic and in the 2014/2015 academic year we rolled the programme out to more departments across the college, simultaneously increasing the role and its responsibilities. The Student Innovator Project helped us to understand students’ needs and how technology is used in different departments. With the development of this project our academic colleagues were also inspired by the student perspective and feedback, and were able to readily incorporate the tools students demonstrated across all areas of the college. Like the students we are also learning as we go!

This project has seen students create collections of educational apps to help recommend what other students should download when starting college. In addition, the Students have organised events to focus on education apps for revision and assignment support.
This academic year the Innovators have continued to review apps and collate apps to help with researching and starting college. You can read the Student Innovators reviews on their blog.
